Bali Island is one of the world’s top tourist destinations that has beautiful scenery as well as unique and noble culture supported by local values such as the Philosophy of Tri Hata Kirana. As the world’s top tourist destination that offers a variety of tourist attractions, local or domestic tourists come to visit Bali Island. One of the major shares of tourism in Bali is Japanese arrivals. The high level of Japanese tourist arrivals should be supported by the availability of human resources that have the ability and skill to use Japanese well.

The high demand for human resources that have the ability and skill to use Japanese well becomes increasingly important because of Japan’s economic development. It makes many Japanese companies establish branch offices or build factories in other countries, including Indonesia. Besides, the availability of human resources that have the ability and skill to use Japanese well is also necessary for the transfer of science and technology because Japan is a country that has a great progress in science and technology. Another important thing that relates to the demand for human resources with the ability and skill to use Japanese well is the need for the agents of culture to bridge the Indonesian cultural exchange, especially the cultural exchange between Balinese culture and Japanese culture.

Because of the high demand for human resources who master Japanese language in Indonesia in general and in Bali in particular, the Faculty of Letters of Udayana University, which is also the oldest faculty and the forerunner of Udayana University, set up a new study program in 2005, namely the Japanese Literature Study Program. Udayana University set up this study program as an effort to generate the human resources that are not only equipped with the ability and skill to use Japanese well but also with the competence which suits the demand arising from the development of science and technology, the world of work, profession, and cultured personality. The Japanese Literature Study Program is one of the eight study programs at the Faculty of Letters. This study program was officially established on 6 October 2005 pursuant to the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education Number: 3203/D/T/2005.
