Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, in collaboration with Animal Don't Speak Human, Holds Scoping Report

Denpasar - Udayana University (Unud) through the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine collaborated with the Indonesian Animal Legal Protection Foundation and World Animal Protection to hold a Scoping Report: Implementation of Farmed Animal Welfare and its Impact on the Environment and Society in Bali at the Nusantara Room, Agrokompleks Building, Sudirman Campus, Denpasar, Tuesday (26/3/2024). This activity was attended by various groups consisting of academics, related agencies, Police, Satpol PP, associations, NGOs and students.

The activity, which was opened by the Rector of Udayana University, presented keynote speaker Mark Dia Global Program Director, Farming from World Animal Protection with the topic Moving the world for people, animals and our planet. Apart from that, there were also three other speakers, namely Drh. Ni Wajan Lesstyawati Palgunadi, M.Si (Main Expert Agricultural Extension Service for the Agriculture and Food Security Service of Bali Province) with the topic of Conditions for Fulfilling the Welfare of Animals Raised in Bali; Dr. drh. Kadek Karang Agustina, MP (Lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University) with the topic Scoping Report: Implementation of livestock welfare and its impact on public health in Bali; and Fiolita Berandhini, SH (Chair of Animal Don't Speak Human) with the topic Scooping Report: The impact of livestock activities on environmental health and permit compliance in Bali.

Chair of the Committee, Indri Prihati, in her report said that this activity was a collaboration between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University and the Indonesian Animal Legal Protection Foundation or better known as Animal Don't Speak Human, which has been taking place since 2023. The activity will take place from 2023 to 2024, which is supported by Animal World Protection involving Research Lecturers and Students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University. The aim of carrying out this activity is that the party wants to convey several research results which will be discussed and ultimately a draft recommendation for future strategic steps to be implemented in a livestock process that is better for public health and the environment will be prepared.

Head of the Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Division Nurul Hadi Ristiyantri, S.Pt., MP representing the Head of the Bali Province Agriculture and Food Security Service in his speech conveyed the concept of animal welfare recognizing the existence of five freedoms, the first is freedom from thirst and hunger, the second is freedom from discomfort, the third is free from pain, the fourth is free to express normal behavior and the fifth is free from fear or distress. Animal welfare is not only beneficial for animal life but also for human life.

"By paying attention to the welfare of animals or livestock, it is our hope that together we will be able to get good quality, healthy and wholesome livestock products," he said.

Some of the benefits of implementing livestock welfare include being able to reduce animal mortality rates, improve animal health status, increase livestock productivity and increase reproduction, reduce livestock production costs and play a role in controlling animal diseases.

Meanwhile, the Rector of Unud, Prof. Ngakan Putu Gede Suardana in his speech said that this activity was initiated by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Unud in collaboration with the Indonesian Animal Legal Protection Foundation and World Animal Protection, where the issue of animal welfare is indeed an inclusive issue that is closely related to human rights such as public health and the environment. healthy and its impact on the animal's habitat. Since 2023, through the collaboration that has been established, activities have been carried out to identify how livestock in Bali is working, including their health. Through this activity, discussions will be obtained to obtain something that can be recommended to the government for collective safety and animal welfare.
