Twins Riyana-Riyani Informatics FMIPA UNUD Win Silver Medal at NASPO 2023
I Gusti Ayu Riyana Astarani and I Gusti Ayu Riyani Astarani, Twin Informatics students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Udayana University class of 2023, succeeded in winning a Silver Medal in the National Applied Science Project Olympiad (NASPO). Both of them have succeeded in developing the application prototype "Weball (Well Being All): Mental Health Service Application Through a Supportive Therapy Approach for Patients Suffering from Schizophrenia" in the field of IoT and its Applications.
This extraordinary achievement was achieved in NASPO which was held by the Actuarial Department at the Faculty of Science and Data Analytics (FSAD), Sepuluh November Institute of Technology (ITS) on 19-22 December 2023. NASPO (National Applied Science Project Olympiad) is a national level research event which inspires Indonesian pupils and students to overcome problems in their surrounding environment. This competition encourages participants to create innovations that can be implemented directly to benefit society.
In her interview, Riyana said that this research was triggered by awareness of the importance of mental health in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Target 3.4 which focuses on reducing deaths from non-communicable diseases and improving mental health. Mental health issues remain a complex global challenge, including social stigma, limited access to mental health services, lack of understanding of mental disorders, and inequities in care. One serious mental disorder is schizophrenia, which affects millions of people worldwide. One effort that can be made is supportive psychotherapy.
For this reason, the Weball (Well Being All) application is available which provides mental health services with a Supportive Therapy approach for schizophrenia patients. With support from informatics lecturer supervisors, namely Agus Muliantara, S.Kom, M.Kom and Komang Ari Mogi, S.Kom, M.Kom, this application is expected to be able to increase the accessibility of mental health services through telemedicine technology, allowing patients to get support at any time and anywhere. The Supportive Therapy approach in this application provides ongoing psychosocial support, helping patients manage stress, and feel supported emotionally and practically.
This activity, which was held online via the Zoom platform, was attended by around 311 teams from various levels of education, from students to college students. The event lasts for two days, starting with the Opening Ceremony on December 19 2023, followed by research presentations and a question and answer session by the jury panel. The event closed with great pride on December 22, 2023 with an Award Ceremony to the winners.
Riyana-Riyani's success story is an inspiration for Indonesia's young generation to innovate and contribute to solving society's problems through research and technology. Congratulations to them on this incredible achievement!
