Guest Lecture : Prof. Josaphat; Creator of CP-SAR from Indonesia for the World
Monday, 19 September 2022, Udayana University Postgraduate held a Guest Lecture with Prof. Josaphat Tetuko Sri Sumantyo, Ph.D, creator of the Circular Polarized-Synthetic Aperture Radar (CP-SAR) affiliated with Sebelas Maret University and Chiba University, Japan. "Advanced Technology of Remote Sensing and Its Applications for Humanity" was the topic of the guest lecture held in the Hall of the Postgraduate Building of Udayana University.
The CP-SAR designed and built at the Josaphat Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (JMRSL) by Prof. Josh – Prof. Josaphat- is a radar sensor that works in the L band or 1.270 GHz and has a wave length of 23cm which makes this radar able to penetrate smoke, clouds and fog and can even penetrate into the ground. With these advantages, the CP-SAR can be used both during the day and at night. So far, the existing satellites are still using conventional SAR, namely Linear Polarized SAR (LP-SAR). Compared with LP-SAR, the advantage of CP-SAR is in circular polarization technology which can reduce the vibration of the radar carrier and the influence of Faraday rotation in the ionosphere. In this way, the image obtained will be more accurate.
“This CP-SAR technology is expected to be very helpful, accommodating all government needs, and all aspects of life that require remote sensing, reconnaissance, and anything that can be done via satellite. We also hope that in less than ten years, we will be able to launch our own SAR satellites,” he said.
This CP-SAR technology is supposed to be very helpful for Environmental Science Masters and Doctoral Study Program students, especially those who are conducting research in the field of Remote Sensing. By using CP-SAR technology, it is hoped that the data obtained will be more precise and accurate, so that the best data can be presented for the progress of students' studies.
In his closing statement, Prof. Josh also advised to always think big, “Be a person who likes to learn, learn everything, build networks, think that we can do big things for the world, not only Indonesia or a small scope. We can prove, Indonesia for the World”. (bmp)
