Department of Physics, now under the auspices of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (Faculty) Udayana University was originally established by the Decree of the Rector of the University of Udayana No. 613 / PT.17 / Ia012 / 1984 dated July 1, 1984. One of the issuance of the decision on the above considerations is the lack of understanding to establish a special container that is used to handle the basic sciences (basic sciences). In addition, the process of development in various fields, especially the utilization of applied sciences (applied sciences) desperately need the support of the development and mastery of the sciences dasar.Berdasarkan Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 63 / Higher Education / Kep / 1988 Sub-notch further Physics Study Program is managed under the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, University of Udayana. The decree also states that the sub-study program is an undergraduate program (S1) and an inter-faculty study program in which the implementation is done in cooperation with State University of Airlangga and Institute of Technology Surabaya. Under Decree No. 92 / Higher Education / Kep / 1989 dated 20 September 1989; the Sub-Study Program Physics converted into Physics Studies Program. This study program is an inter-faculty study program under the Rector and the Program Tier 1 (S-1) .Through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0382/0/1993 dated October 22, 1993 it was decided to establish the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (Faculty) Udayana University which consists of 3 courses (PS) is PS. Physics, PS. Chemistry and PS. Biology. Finally, with the issuance of the Director General of Higher Education Decree dated January 15, 1994, the State University of Udayana declared consists of three departments of the Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry and Department of Biology.
