Capitalizing on Local Waste, Udayana University Civil Engineering Successfully Brings Home 6 National Achievements in a Month

Lately, material innovation is one of the trending topics in the world of construction. Innovative materials are not only in demand because of their environmentally friendly nature, but also at a lower price than conventional materials which are widely available in the field. The method for working on this material is not complicated, it tends to require a shorter time when it is mass produced. Innovation material developed by students of the Civil Engineering study program at Udayana University (Unud) under the guidance of Putu Cinthya Pratiwi Kardita, S.T., M.T. made from local waste that is easy to find in the Province of Bali.

"We see the availability of raw materials in large quantities and tends to damage the environment if not utilized optimally. Some of the raw materials used can be obtained easily and the processing process is quite short," explained Pratiwi. He also added that in addition to local waste found in nature, there is also bamboo sawdust obtained from a bamboo building contractor in Bali Province, and even Udayana University has a Memerandum of Understanding (MoU) with the contractor.

The idea of making an innovative material that can be used as a substitute for conventional materials was sparked by Civil Engineering students at Udayana University who are members of several groups and have won several awards at the national level during May 2023. The materials made vary from wall blocks, briquettes, concrete light, ceiling, and mortar. The waste used includes tabas stone waste (coarse and fine aggregate), chopped plastic, used cooking oil, blood clam waste, and bamboo sawdust waste.

The following are some of the achievements that have been obtained at the national level along with the names of the team members:
