In order to celebrating the 54th anniversary of Udayana University, the university conducted a series of events involving all faculties at the university, in which each faculty sent its representative to compete in various type of competitions known as the " The 54th Dies Natalis Udayana University”. One of the very prestigious competitions in the event's anniversary was the selection of Jegeg Bagus Udayana. The selection of Jegeg Bagus Udayana was going through various series of selection process and assessment; such as: selection of best essay and candidates with good knowledge, talent tests, and public speaking to get the top three, which became the top agenda of the event and the opened the 54th Dies Natalis Udayana.
The selection of Jegeg Bagus Udayana was quite interesting this year as it was different from of the previous year. The Selection of candidates with good knowledge was done by interviewing the candidates. It was because the scoring system this year preferred spontaneity of the candidates in answering the questions and their attitudes in delivering the answers. Their spontaneities were considered as an important value to see their personalities. In addition, this year, Jegeg Bagus candidates would get an introduction to Udayana and the environment, culture, and leadership by the judges.
One of male candidates was delivering his essay presentation in Bangsa Room, Rectorate Building of Udayana University, Bukit Jimbaran.
As an initial step of selecting Jegeg Bagus Udayana, essay tests and interviews were held on August 22, 2016 presenting seven judges who had various backgrounds and have been experts in their specialties. The representative of each faculty should make an essay with the theme 'Local Cultural Development Strategy to Create Udayana University with Global Competitive Value' and presenting them to the judges. According to Yandhani Astika Putra, as committee chief of the event, the purpose of creating this theme was to make the elected Jegeg Bagus could be ambassadors for global environment, without forgetting the culture and local values. Besides, there was also a discussion session during the essay test to assess the preparation of the candidates in preparing their essays through their spontaneities in answering questions.
The tests which conducted in Nusa and Bangsa Rooms were done separately between Jegeg Bagus candidates. This was due to the individual assessment system. Made Asri Wahyuni, a candidate of Faculty of Social and Political Science, stated that the candidates had to prepare their mentalities, health and material readiness. In addition, they must be careful in answering the judges’ question as well; to be not subjective or too critical without providing any solution which did not have any impact to both local and global problems.
