Doctor of Medical Sciences Proves Potential of Purple Sweet Potato Root Extract in Treating Fatty Liver Disease

Located in the Meeting Room dr. A A. Made Djelantik FK Udayana University Denpasar, the Doctoral Promotion exam has taken place with the promotion candidate, dr. Syuma Adhy Awan, M.Kes., Sp.GK(K) with the dissertation title "The Effect of Purple Sweet Potato Root Extract on the Hepato Renal Index in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Obese Adults." (16/8/2023)

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (PPHNA) has a complex pathogenesis and a broad spectrum of disease, being one of the causes of chronic liver disease (cirrhosis). Mild inflammation, insulin resistance, oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are a vicious cycle of molecular mechanisms for the development of PPHNA. The anthocyanins of purple sweet potato extract, (Ipomea batatas L.) purple sweet potatoes (PSPE) have been shown to improve steatosis, but no clinical trials have been conducted in humans. Currently there is no treatment that has been fully proven to be effective in curing hepatic steatosis. This study aims to evaluate the effect of PSPE capsule supplementation on Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α), Malondealdehyde (MDA), Homeostasis Model Assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), Hepatosteatosis Index (HSI) and Hepato Renal Index (HRI)) in obese PPHNA patients.

This research is a real experimental study using a pre and post randomized controlled trial design, with double blindness. A total of 53 fatty liver patients were divided into 2 groups, for 12 weeks each group received standard therapy and supplementation of PSPE capsules of 800 mg per day in the intervention group or placebo capsules for the control group. Conclusion: PSPE capsule supplementation of 800 mg per day for 12 weeks reduced HOMA–IR, MDA and HRI levels more significantly than the control group.
