The Biology Study Program, FMIPA, Udayana University hosted the 4th KOBI (Indonesian Biology Consortium) Congress
The congress took place on 16-17 November 2022, in Nusantara Room, Agrokomplek Building, Udayana University Campus, Sudirman Denpasar Bali. Organizing the Congress in collaboration with the Implementation of the Science and Technology International Conference (STIC).
The speech was delivered by the Chair of KOBI for the 2020-2022 Period (Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc., who in essence conveyed the performance that had been carried out. The Dean of FMIPA Unud (Dra. Ni Luh Watiniasih, M.Sc., Ph.D) gave a speech and officially opened the Congress, who in his speech said that KOBI is in accordance with its objectives, namely to play an active role in the development of higher biology education in mastering biodiversity, optimal and sustainable use of biological natural resources for the welfare of mankind and sustainability. environment, with 3 main steps that have been agreed to be carried out, namely: (1) Assembling higher education institutions in the field of biology, both government and private; (2) Communicating, establishing cooperation, and synergizing with institutions engaged in biology and related fields, both at home and abroad; (3) Assisting the government in the development of various sectors of life involved related to the field of Biology.
The KOBI Congress has succeeded in establishing three major decisions, namely, first, to appoint Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr.Sc. as the KOBI Chair for the 2022-2026 period, second, to establish the Outline of the KOBI Work Program for the 2022-2026 period and third, to make changes to several aspects of the KOBI articles of association and household budget (AD- ART). The congress also presented several materials, namely: (1) Functional Position of Biological Curator with Resource Person: Plt. Director of Functional Position Development and Professional Development (National Research and Innovation Agency/BRIN); (2) Presentation of Indonesian Medical Biology Association (PBMI) Indonesia Biologist Association (IBA); (3) Sharing information on the Indonesian Science Fund (DIPI) by Prof. Jatna Supriatna; and (3) Cooperation discussions with KOBI partners.
During the congress, KOBI also determined important points related to the Indonesia Biodiversity Index (IBI), namely:
Related to G20 agenda on conservation mangrove ecosystem and biodiversity today 16 November 2022.
Mangroves ecosystems have rich economic commodities of both flora and fauna. Such as crab, shrimp, fish, etc.
The Economics of Biodiversity: The Dasgupta Review highlighted “to understand that the human economy is bounded and reshapes our understanding of what constitutes truly sustainable economic growth and development: accounting fully for the impact of our interactions with Nature and rebalancing our demand with Nature’s capacity to supply”.
Therefore, we need to measure the biodiversity status and trends in specific places or ecosystems. Such as to see the indicator of biodiversity in the mangrove ecosystems.
Currently, the Indonesia Consortium Biology (Konsorsium Biologi Indonesia - KOBI) has promoted and developed the Indonesia Biodiversity Index (IBI).
The IBI can be used as an indicator for measuring biodiversity based on ecosystem and or jurisdiction based.
However, IBI still needs to be improved and enhanced both the governance and infrastructure to run the big data.
Therefore, collaboration among parties’ government, academia, researchers, and conservation practices is pivotal to strengthening the IBI initiative.
