A Doctor of Medical Sciences incorporates local knowledge into his Total Ergonomics approach.

Located in the third floor Postgraduate courtroom, the Doctoral Promotion exam was held with the promovendus candidate Ir. Putu Bachelor, M.Erg with the dissertation title "Integration of Local Wisdom in a Total Ergonomic Approach Improving the Capabilities and Productivity of Workers in Home Industry Making Uli Snacks in Pedungan Village, Denpasar". (25/8/2022)

Snack uli is a form of traditional food that is widely used for offerings and for consumption by Balinese people. The process of making Uli snacks goes through several stages from steaming sticky rice, pounding, printing, slicing, drying and frying. In this series of processes, several ergonomic problems occurred, especially in the slicing process. During the process of slicing snacks, it is done in a cross-legged sitting posture which causes discomfort due to disturbances in the musculoskeletal system and pressure on the intervertebral discs, which can cause low back pain.

In the preliminary study, it was found that there were complaints in most of the body organs such as; back, waist, neck, calves, hands, thighs and buttocks. To overcome this, an ergonomic intervention was carried out by integrating local wisdom in a total ergonomics approach, namely the work attitude from sitting cross-legged to sitting in a chair using a work table according to the worker's anthropometry and rotating weights on the work table.

Research with treatment by subject design was carried out on 12 slicing food workers in Pedungan Village, Denpasar. The workload was calculated based on the pulse using the palpation method, fatigue was predicted from 30 items of the general fatigue questionnaire, musculoskeletal complaints were predicted using the Nordic Body Map questionnaire, and work productivity was calculated based on the production results divided by the workload and working time.

The results showed that by integrating local wisdom into a total ergonomics approach, improvements in ergonomic work stations (use of chairs and desks) could reduce workload (10.4%), decrease fatigue (54.9%), decrease musculoskeletal complaints ( 34.9%), increasing work productivity (68.3%), and increasing workers' income (50.9%). It can be concluded that the integration of local wisdom in the total ergonomics approach can increase the capability of workers through decreasing workload, decreasing fatigue, decreasing musculoskeletal complaints, increasing workers' income and productivity.
